I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Department of Computer Science to all students taking our Computer Science and related programmes. Most of the communications between staff and students takes place electronically. A large amount of the information about the department and its courses is available on the web. It is important that you become familiar with the structure and contents of the pages that concern you and the course you take. Electronic mail is used extensively to communicate any changes (e.g. a change in lecture venue), so it is vital that you check your email regularly. |

Problems and feedback on computing matters are dealt with by our IT committee, on which students have representatives. The Department has a Staff/Student committee. The Committee meets five times during the academic year. The Committee comprises elected student representatives and members of staff who are nominated to represent year groups. These members of staff are responsible for fielding items and making sure that items get resolved. Items for the Staff/Student committee are submitted in advance to the staff representatives so that a solution can be initiated. Items brought up at the meeting will be reported on at the following meeting. The SSC reports to the departments Teaching and Learning Committee which in turn reports to the Board of Studies. I am sure you will enjoy your time with us. However, you should not forget that the main purpose of your period in the department is to get the best qualification you can achieve. The staff are geared up to help you achieve this aim. You are required to attend the lectures, do the practical work, do the required reading (and more) and of course pass the examinations. Your final mark will come from a mixture of problem, exam and practical exercises. You need to work consistently throughout the year, do not rely on just passing exams, or just passing the practicals. If you would like advice about taking exams then we have written a short guide on exam technique, (no, unfortunately it does not contain the questions and answers for next year). All the best and I hope you enjoy your time in Computer Science Head of Department of Computer Science |
